History

Watson Insurance Agency, Inc. is a third generation, family owned and operated insurance agency located in the Charlotte, NC area.  For over 75 years, Watson has valued the importance of keeping client interests first.  This mission is exemplified through our Scrap Metal Shield Insurance Program, a program developed to better accommodate the needs of our clients in the scrap metal recycling industry.

Development of the Scrap Metal Shield Program

In the early 2000’s, Watson’s commercial division team was approached with the opportunity to insure a scrap metal dealer.  Watson Insurance quickly discovered that this was a market that several insurance carriers were skeptical to look at, and thus became very interested in the market as a whole.  Watson Insurance discovered that the insurance needs of scrap metal dealers were very different from those of a junkyard, and needed to be tailored to their operations.  After gaining more insight into the insurance needs of scrap metal dealers, and sparking the interest of several insurance carriers, Watson Insurance was able to provide appropriate coverage for a number of local scrap metasl dealers.

From there, Watson Insurance set out to develop a program for scrap metal dealers across the Southeast.  By 2007, the program had grown substantially into a book of over 30 accounts across the Southeast.  In 2008, Watson Insurance made the move to take the program nationally, and began insuring multi-location shredding facilities along with multi-location processors and feeder yards.

The Program Today

With the help of our brokered partners, the Scrap Metal Shield Insurance Program currently insures over 100 metal recycling accounts across the nation.  Operating in nearly every state in the US, Watson Insurance has successfully developed a program to meet the insurance needs of scrap metal dealers nationwide.  Watson Insurance maintains an active membership in the Institute of Scrap Recycling, Inc. (ISRI).  Our ISRI membership helps us stay connected with other insurance professionals and current on any industry changes, which in turn allows us to better serve our clients.
